Despite manic lifestyle, afternoon tea remains a beloved British tradition. We like a relaxed affair – as well as one, infused with elegance.

We visited the jubilee salon at Fortnums on a number of occasions.  Delighted to report, that I have never been disappointed. The tea is fit for connoisseurs and the Jewel like afternoon sweet treats, are Beautiful as well as tasty.

This time, we indulged in what is referred to as ‘High Tea’, rather than the Classic Afternoon Tea. Fortnums High tea includes a delicious hot dish to start with. There is a good selection to choose from, so hopefully something for everyone.

I opted for the lobster bisque omelette, with truffles. Since I don’t count calories, it proved to be the wisest of choices!

Scones, clotted cream and confitures usually make an appearance.

Fortnums is among my top 5 favourite afternoon teas. It is best to pre-book, but no pressure to book too far in advance, like some other places who seem to enjoy torturing any hapless punter, attempting a reservation…

Perfect venue for a special celebration, (birthday, wedding anniversary, divorce proceedings, victories against the Borgias etc)  a casual meeting with beloved friends, work meeting or a pick me up (for those days when the whole world turns against you).

There are crisp tablecloths, pretty Duck egg blue China, and well polished silverware. Tables are generously spacious, staff is attentive without being annoying or servile, (always a tough act to balance)

If you are thinking of booking afternoon tea in London do make sure you research it first. It is expensive but worth it in my view. (places to avoid where – I ve had some poor experiences here)

    Another great place to go
I would prefer high tea (as a perfect replacement for dinner or lunch) , but these days ,with too many meals when in London, I have to choose afternoon tea,or even cream tea with a glas of bubbles.
At home I drink only tea (although have to check new patisserie here, with scones!!! Can you believe it?)

I do love afternoon tea, however, a nice high tea luncheon is wonderful also. The blue China at Fortnum’s is lovely, I should very much like to be served on those plates! Thank you, Lady Sarah for a delightful visual treat, and carry on against the evil Borgias.
